I hope it’s twinkly, peaceful, brilliant.

Do you ever have one of those days?
You want to be anywhere. Anywhere but here.
And the gratitude practices and the meditations and the prayers and the positive psychology fail you.
And you feel guilty, because THAT lesson keeps cropping up.
READ: You’re still doing it wrong. Condescending tone.
But you’re SO sick of that stupid lesson.
And because you are that which you focus on.
And, well, shit. You thought you were doing better. Thought your focus had shifted.
(Or maybe they really are just assholes.)
Because if you KNEW how to do it differently, you would.
Those days, when it rains, it pours. And the air is heavy on your shoulders.
And the unkindnesses and misunderstandings multiply, compound.
Silver linings turn to aluminum.
THAT voice echoes: you fucked up. Again.
You feel invisible, even while you’re screaming.
Even while you’re bleeding.
And somehow, that still feels like your fault.
Except now, thank the gods, you can know — know — this is temporary.
You have red lips and wild hair and concrete alibis to help you through it.
There is shared laughter and laced fingers to help carry the weight.
Because, now, not here is everywhere. Because we are there. And here.
And we are everywhere.
So, I’m not going to tell you I enjoy doing laundry, or even that I’m good at it.
“Cause that’d be a bold-faced lie.
What I will tell you is that ever since I’ve been using this product…
…and adding a cup of white vinegar to each load of laundry that I do, my clothes are coming out noticeably softer, cleaner, and smelling better. Our front-loader washer has also smelled much fresher.
I only noticed this as I was just folding a basket of laundry that came out of the dryer. Three days ago.
Disclaimer: I’m also a leave-the-clothes-in-the-machines type of launderess. (Judge away.)

It often catches me off-guard when I encounter people who assume the worst of a situation. I’m just not built like that. I default to thinking that people show me the best that they can, in any given moment.
So today, when someone inferred insult out of what I intended to be a very benign question, I was confused.
And, for a while, I was offended. I became defensive. How dare she? She doesn’t even know me.
And, there’s the rub.
We humans tend to make an awful lot of shit up. It’s our propensity to try and fill in the blanks, and make sense of it all. We leap to conclusions without all the facts. We assume.
Years ago, I saw this clip on an episode of the “Odd Couple”, and it’s always stuck with me (not in small part to its ability to make me giggle).
Without knowing, we create scenarios in our minds. Instead of asking, we fabricate the answers. This becomes troublesome since more often what we assume is negative. It tends to illustrate what more about what we feel about ourselves, than how we view a situation.
All things being equal, and having a 50/50 chance of getting the answer right, what if we chose to assume the best in each situation? It’s just as plausible, isn’t it?
And if we attract that which we focus on, what do you think would happen if we anticipated a positive response, instead of assuming a negative one? Is it possible we could invite more light into our lives?
That’s my suggestion this evening. If you don’t know, ask. If you have the opportunity to assume, choose the best possible assumption.
And for heaven’s sake, don’t make me an ass. =)

J

We are the same.
We mourn our loved ones.
We ourselves want to be loved.
Heard.
Acknowledged.
We want to matter.
We want someone to notice us.
We are the same.
We love our children.
We each think we are too…something.
Our hearts break equally loudly.
Our tears are just as salty.
Our smiles are universal.
We are made of the exact same stardust.
Our souls shine equally bright, without confines of skin or sinew.
You are my light. I am yours.
We are the same.
To bear burden, to scream truths, to rise.
We. Are. The. Same.
